Self Care for Mental Wellness

Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. Essentially, the term describes a conscious act a person takes in order to promote their own physical, mental, and emotional health.

When you’ve taken steps to care for your mind and body, you’ll be better equipped to live your best life.

Lifestyle Habits to Improve Mental Health

Lose the belief that self-care is time consuming or selfish. The following is a list of doable lifestyle habits to improve your mental well being:

  • Recognize negative self talk and shift to positivity. (A cognitive therapist and/or loving-kindness-meditation can help with this.)
  • Take care of your body. Even a short, brisk daily walk goes a long way.
  • Spend more time outdoors. Bring that laptop outside on a nice spring/summer day.
  • Be more mindful of screen time and take steps to reduce it, especially close to bedtime.
  • Find a hobby that brings you joy.
  • Learn to say NO and set boundaries.
  • Reach out to a friend you can trust to help address your emotional stressors.
